My Quest for a Coton de Tulear Puppy
|

|
I began my quest for a puppy because my children were growing up and I wanted a companion. I thought a baby would be a great addition to our family, but my husband disagreed. So I concentrated on finding the perfect dog. My requirements: small, white, and fluffy. My husband however, had other ideas. Our new pet couldn’t shed, smell, or bark a lot. It was a tall order, but I was up to the challenge. I spent hours and hours on the internet, researching small, white, fluffy dogs. Only a few fit my husband’s requirements. One night, I accidentally stumbled onto the USACTC web site. There, I found the perfect dog. I eagerly went from web site to web site reading all the information about the breed that I could find. That breed was the Coton de Tulear.
To convince my husband that this was indeed the right breed for us, I printed out information for him every night, and within a week, he was hooked. We spent the next few months reading everything we could about these loveable little dogs. After much discussion and research, we decided we wanted a show quality dog. We were ready to join the ranks of exhibitors and breeders.

We found a breeder within a few hours drive and our whole family eagerly made the trek to see this breed first hand. We wanted to touch, smell, and play with them. We wanted to see how they moved. We instantly fell in love with the breed. We found them to be everything we were looking for. Unfortunately, the breeder had deposits on future puppies for the next two years, so we continued to look elsewhere.
We turned to the internet, once again, and found a wonderful breeder in Arizona. She was helpful, patient, and took the time to answer all of our questions. She told us she had a little girl that she thought was show quality, and e-mailed us pictures. When my husband and I saw her it was love at first sight. We printed out the pictures and showed them to everyone who would give us the opportunity. Some of our friends thought we were crazy but we continued with our plans.

We attended an ARBA show in Indianapolis in June 2002, and were delighted to see so many cotons in one place. We marveled at how they moved on the competition floor and reveled in their sweet personalities. Upon our return from the show, the Arizona breeder told us that our little girl was ready to call our house her home. She was flown from Arizona to the Indianapolis airport. With great anticipation my husband and I made the trek to pick up our new baby.
That was the beginning of our life with our Wee Bit of Heaven. She is everything we had hoped for and more. We love her happy personality and the funny things that she does. Our three children complain that we treat her better than we treat them! As any dog lover knows, that’s probably true! We love every minute with her and she makes everyday brighter. We are planning to add another coton to our home soon. Some- one once told us, “Cotons are like potato chips, you can’t have just one”. You’ll find that out too.
Now, our girl goes everywhere with us. She goes to work with me every- day, and she really believes that my customers only come in to see her - she may be right! She is like velcro and wants to be by our side every minute. If we are doing something, you can be sure that she is in the middle of it. I don’t think she knows she’s a dog. And do you know what? She almost has us convinced that she’s not!
