The Coton De Tulear (co-TAWN day-two-LAY-are) originated from Madagascar in the fifteenth or sixteenth century. The Coton takes it’s name form the Madagascar port, Tulear, located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa. Reportedly, there was a shipwreck and the Coton predecessors swam to shore, breeding with the island dogs. They were embraced by the Madagascar Royalty due to their beauty and charming personalities. Only royalty were allowed to own the breed, which contributed to the fact that they are so rare today. They became known as the “Royal Dog of Madagascar”.

The Coton De Tulear is a small white fluffy dog, bred to be a companion. These intelligent, little, shaggy dogs have lively personalities and will do anything to please you. They are little clowns and love to interact with their families, sometimes walking on their hind legs for attention. They are always ready to run and play but are content to sit at your side for hours. They will cock their head to the side when you talk to them and they love to give you puppy kisses.

They have a life span of 15-19 years, and due to high standards of breeding have no know genetic defects. They have long whit cottony “hair”, and are free of dander and dog odor. They make an excellent choice for allergy sufferers. Their coat needs to be brushed several times a week to prevent matting. During brushing, the dead hairs come out, so shedding is kept to a minimum.

Cotons are little dogs with big hearts. They love their families unconditionally, and want to accompany them everywhere. They are excellent travelers. They love to take long walks, and play outside no matter what the weather. They are not a guard dog, nor do they bark a lot, however, they will sound an alarm when someone comes to the door. After the door is opened, however, they can’t wait to meet their new friend.

A Coton will warm your heart and your bed. They will become a member of your family. They are intelligent,
happy little dogs. They are known as the anti-stress (Prozac) dogs of the 21st century. The hardest part of
owning a Coton is trying to stop yourself from spoiling them!
